I didn't notice from Canberra. But I am a great believer in people getting underserved honours. I certainly appreciate them myself. My own New Year's Honour was the reception I got at Nariel Creek Folk Festival, arriving at 10pm on 31st after a 6 hour drive, from peope I had not bothered to contact since the previous year. I deserved the KUTB (Kick Up The Bum) from most of them. As for Tom Jones, he is one of those really useful great singers with a crap repertoire, so you can appreciate what they are doing with their voice without being distracted by the song, and without having to add to your collection. Frank Sinatra is another. I would probably add Dusty Springfield and Dolly Parton, but that's probably another thread - singers I listen to but don't own a recording of. Oh and surprisingly TJ does all his cavorting on stage. Off it he is sober, serious, well-mannered and gentle, still marrried to his childhood sweetheart who tours with him, and managed by their son. He probably does deserve the DHB (Decent Human Being). Canberra Chris (can't remember if this is my 'member' or 'guest' address.)
