While I agree totally with what's been said about Godins, you might just keep an eye open for the Danelectro guitar. They're a bit on the weird looking side (pastel colors, kind of a vintage, big body, but light, design), but they play really well and are quite reasonably priced. "Lipstick" pickups with a really bright tone. I've also got a Takamine solid body electric (TZ300), which has double humbuckers and is quite a good rock& roll guitar for around $400 or so.
