I've recently developed a love of Irish songs, & found a weekly singers session in an Irish pub in Boston USA. I learned "Maggie" from Maura O'Connell, to add to my "Irish" reportoire, even though songs of all traditions are welcome in the pub. I was disappointed to learn a few months ago that it was an American song. Now I'm learning it's Canadian, & was popularized in Ireland in an Irish play. I guess it doesn't really matter - a good song is a good song. But from my limited experience, "Maggie" feels so Irish to me. Do you think it has Irish influences? 1867 would've been after alot of Irish emmigrated to the Americas. And is this an example of a "parlour song"? I think I was told it pre-dated "music hall songs". Anything you could tell me would be appreciated. (I'd like to know a little more about the songs I sing, but not quite enough to want to do extensive research...)
