We had an Electrolux cylinder for yonks. It finally gave up the ghost and I bought a Dyson bagless cleaner. An expensive top-of-the range model. Never again. There was dust everywhere when it needed emptying (despite great care from me) and the power cable had to be completely pulled out before use but took a lot of fiddling about to get it to retract. And it was an awkward shape for storage I now have a Miele (bagged) cleaner which was also expensive and purchased mainly because it has a good pet-hair/dander filter. It is powerful, easy to empty, has a long hose and is reasonably stable when perched on the stairs. The hose/cleaning head clips into a socket in either the upright or reclined positions for storage and the tools all fit neatly inside the casing. I would recommend it although the bags are expensive (but they hold a lot). I've had it about 3 years.
