Kweku ......it is beautiful (17) ......it is beautiful 29 Mar 06

I got to the office at exactly 7:45am GMT standard time.

The whole building was virtually empty with people not turning up for work. Some had gone to the coast because Kumasi is in the hinterland and from reports; all the hotels along the coast of Ghana and specifically in Cape Coast were full of tourists. At around 8:15am reports started coming in from towns in the Western Region of Ghana about the movement of the moon across the sun, immediately we rushed out of our office with our protective sunglasses on.

We watched at intervals as the moon gradually blocked the sunrays and the birds in the skies started perching on trees; the skies darkened and shadows started forming. My God, it was beautiful.

Just as we were enjoying the spectacular sight a co-worker rushed to inform us that Accra the capital had been plunged into total darkness and that this was been shown live on television. We rushed to the library to find it full of other workers, all-standing glued to the sight before us.

By now people had started calling friends and relatives along the coast to find out how they were experiencing it. Whiles some had gathered along the beaches to watch the spectacle, others had gone to sleep, especially the old folk.

By 9:45am the much-awaited eclipse of the sun was now heading towards Libya I think. Well I had got my share of nature's magic. And cared less for the rest.

After the eclipse, the weirdo's like my self concluded that since the last eclipse of the sun occurred in 1947 and it was in that year that the first political party was formed in Ghana and that was the time Dr. Nkrumah (1st prez of Ghana) came back to Ghana after a long stay outside the country, it means that some political earthquake was about to take place. The Muslims said that since the moon had passed over the sun it signifies purification of the earth; and the last group said, well everybody should enjoy the wonders of nature and stop reading meanings into everything.

The next eclipse of the sun is likely to occur in 2037. I will be there for the second time.
