Writing as a non-bass-player who had to record synth bass lines for MIDI programs, I found you could get reasonable results by working out your target notes (main components of each significant chord change) and then literally "walking" in a scale pattern between them. Probably breaks a lot of rules if you don't fully work out the harmonic theory, but it usually sounds reasonable!
