GUEST,Desdemona BS: Stockings or Suspenders ? (52* d) RE: BS: Stockings or Suspenders ? 04 Jul 06

Ah, yet another example of two great nations dividede by a common language!

In the UK, "suspenders" hold up stockings, and "braces" hold up trousers.

In the US, "suspenders" hold up pants, which in the UK are what a lady wears in addition to stockings and suspenders [that is, if she *is* a lady...], while a "garter belt" is used to hold up stockings; "braces" go on the teeth of adolescent children to make them straight.

"And so 'tis as clear as the summer sun..."!
