GUEST,Murray on Saltspring BS: Czy Panstwo movi po polsku? (41) RE: BS: Czy Panstwo movi po polsku? 15 Feb 00

My Polish is woeful these days, and I never could speak it fluently unless I was far from sober. But you may be interested in a translation I made of an old Polish carol -- you'll know it I expect, "Lulajze Jezuniu": [can't get those diacritical marks I'm afraid]. It goes like this:
Lulajze Jezuniu, lulajze lulaj!
A ty go matulu w placzu utulai.
[that's the chorus, actually]
Wejrz okiem laskawem na swiat ten caly,
Blogoslaw go raczka Jezuniu maly.
[+ twice through chorus]. The tune and text I got from a dear old friend in 1973. Tune is used in one of Chopin's pieces, but I can never remember which. There's another version in Josepha K. Contoski, Treasured Polish Songs (Minneapolis, Polanie Pub. Co., 1953), p. 226--has 43 verses (2 with tr.), none of which are in my version; with a slightly different tune. I'll try and express it in do-re-mi:
Key G 3/4 m m m / f f- m/ r r r / f s - /m m m / f f- m/ r s- f/ f m -//s s d't/ l l- s/ f f l /l s -/ m m m / f f- m /r s- f/ f m -//
= more or less

Lullaby, Jesu mine, lullay, my sweeting!
Mummy will soothe away all of your weeping. [bis]

Look on this world of ours with eye that's kindly,
Give it your blessing, O Jesu my baby.
Lullaby etc. I can comment on Polish songs and whatnot, but not to any great extent IN Polish, I'm afraid. Good luck finding those who can! Powodzenia, i dowidzenia!
