I think the "ideal" Mack describes, which I share, does not exist much any more. Most recordings are virtual reality, with the performers never really sitting around in a room in close proximity playing and singing with each other. The result is an illusion. It never really happened. There is no "real thing" from which the recording can appear indistinguishable. It is a hypothetical construct. And it lacks something essential. Let us also remember that it is the job of each generation to create a music which is totally offensive to its parents. I think they have done a really good job.
