What a treat it is to watch old Gene Autry movies. They were really musicals with just enough plot to get some shootin' and ridin' and roundin' up the bad guys to satisfy the youngun's. I have a lot of his pictures on VCR and DVD and there's not one that has fewer than seven songs, many composed by Gene's sidekick, Froggy, who, in addition to his songwriting abilities, was adept on many instruments. Roy Rogers movies featured better arranged songs, performed by Roy's old band, The Sons of the Pioneers. Their style was slick and sleek, not far from what was called Western Swing but Gene sandg more real cowboy songs than Roy did. They were, both, great. Mike
