What I mean is that even with traditional songs, there is usually a generally accepted idea of how they sound tune/melody-wise. For instance, if somebody was looking for a recording of "House of the Rising Sun", I wouldn't refer them to Lead Belly's version ("Down in New Orleans") because it sounds completely different from what most people think of as "House of the Rising Sun."
