Ian, most of the facts fit (I go to Warwick FF most years, I do get called Rick, and I do remember talking to someone on the campsite there about tunings a few years ago) - except for the "very nice guitar player" bit, that must have been someone else! I'm trying your minor-third-down version as I write. What a lovely noise!
