Well now I have to take odds with you all! A musician, to me, is someone who is able to hear the difference between carefull phrasing, the real music of the music, and way beyond what is written down, and those who cannot. Those who cannot may still enjoy music, just as the colour blind may enjoy a painting - it is a different, not defficient, perception of the same entity.
Those who know what the music of the music is will understand that technical competence is required to attain these levels for the subtelty of timing is paramount but also not necessarily difficult for those who can hear it - it requires practice.
I have an abhorrence of classification and labelling in all things - as yet there is no IQ test to measure the abilities of the slow deep thinker - but because one can't do doesn't mean one can't appreciate and it takes one musician to recognise another.
