Cunningham is talking through his bunnet. Jamieson's dictionary (1825) defines 'Wauking o' the Fauld' as "the act of watching the sheep-fold, about the end of summer, when the lambs were weaned, and the ewes milked." The Scottish National Dictionary agrees. Fauld never did mean the cloth being waulked. The 2 words have different derivations, one cognate with 'wake', the other with 'walk'. |
