I. Some inspiration--not necessarily a prostrating experience. It could be something that strikes you as you're scatting ad libitum or noodling around your instrument. It could be an idea that you decide to put into music. II. The acceptance that your initial inspiration is not an inviolable tablet of stone. Revision can do wonders, and get you more inspired. III. Some way to set down or remember what you've come up with. I've heard more than one great songwriter say that, If it's not set down right away, it's gone.
