Joe has been a tireless advocate for Vietnam vets, working to get them services, care and recognition. He has taken a lot of flack from people who feel his work is tantamount to supporting the Vietnam war, while he maintains that the vets were also victims of the war.

Joe is also a great fan of nurses (his brother is one), and an expert on Florence Nightingale. He maintains a website about Florence Nightingale, and has been working with Jane Fonda to produce a film about her life. He has written a number of songs about nurses.
