I think the performing thing, the research thing, the playing thing and even the teaching all come down to a matter of balance. Part of the overall craft of being a folk musician requires the ability to interact with an audience, digging into the past for insight and the ability to pass on the skill-set to a new generation of players. If you go too far or not far enough in any one aspect of the craft everything kind of falls apart. -Patrick
