In the book "Kingdom Coming" by Michelle Goldberg, the main question about federal funding for faith-based initiatives seems to be hiring practices. For example, she talks about how the Salvation Army, which has traditionally not had any faith requirements for its employees, started asking employees to document their church attendance, and driving out gay or Jewish staff. I have no problem with the idea of government funding for church-based social services - and I know there are plenty of great ones out there - but if they're violating human rights codes in their hiring, that seems very questionable.
