As a young PE Teacher I took one of the first school groups to Ghyll Head from Levenshulme High for Girls. It was in the winter and were taken along Crinkle Crags in the pouring freezing rain and then waded back through a river to the mini bus at the end of the day. Absolutely no 'health and safety' in those days, just challenge and fun and really good food. Tony Richards was one of the leaders. I went later that year with a larger group. Stayed one night at Tranearth over below the Old Man. Tremendous for city pupils.
