Spanish Ladies, Rant & Roar, Yankee Whaler Men, all the same tune Spanish ladies the lyrics are quite a bit different than the ones for Rant & Roar (Newfoundland version) or Yankee Whalermen (New England version) for those two you swap place names and landmarks. (Toslo/New Bedford etc...)Spanish Ladies has a bit more of a narrative to it while the other versions are more like an E harmony profile! "I'm the son of a sea cook I'm a cook and a trader, I can dance I can Sing I can reefs the main boom, I can handle a jigger I cuts a fine figure when ere I gets in a Boat's standing Room .... seeks a shorebound lassie with similar interests." And just to beat General Taylor's long dead horse it is without any question beyond a shadow of a doubt and without fear of contradiction NOT a shanty. It does not have the call and response format. (That oughta get 'em going! ;P)
