I have had family members/ancestors in several wars including the American Revolution, the American Civil War, Spanish American War, First World War, Second World War etc. Some have returned, some have not. I mention this because I don't want you to think that I take your loss lightly. But until we begin to feel and honor the loss of innocent civilians I don't believe we can change anything. Soldiers (God bless them) know they may pay the ultimate price when they enlist, and too many do, and always have. But the sheer numbers of unarmed noncombatants and the misery of their families and friends is too often overlooked by all of us. Let us mourn all senseless deaths, not just those who chose to serve in the armed forces. It is unspeakably sad that only the deaths of military personnel are reported daily, and not civilian losses. How many children are lost to parents? How many children are left without parents? How many innocent people are wounded and maimed and have no access to even the most basic medical care? Why do our governments continually try to downplay the loss of innocent lives? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to rant. None of this diminishes the loss of this young man.
