A good friend owns an F5 whose serial number is one removed from the Bill Monroe instrument. I have played it, but I am no mandolin player, so I don't know enough to describe its musical characteristics. It's certainly a nice old instrument (which I suppose is like describing Van Gogh's Sunflowers as "a nice picture of a pot of flowers"). I do know that my friend took measurements and built a replica instrument based on the Loar; several people who have tried both claim that the reproduction sounds every bit as good, but of course, it does not have the same intangible "character."
