To the end of his days (about 1997) however, his spoken English verged on the incomprehensible. I guess he was too busy making ends meet to be able to spend time learning yet another language. Give the guy a break. Learning a language in adulthood is very hard, and harder yet if you don't have a natural knack for it. We won't even go into my bad gringa accent when I speak Spanish.
