So after reading all of this I'm still going to have to tell folks,"I just don't know who is responsible for this song or when it was written." Possibly as early as the mid 19th century, but probably not. Ya know that sounds like a folk song. It's just there. It has several different sets of lyrics, and people like to hear and sing it. Thanks for the entertaining read and info.
