In the late 1980s/early 1990s my band took on a young sax player who was only 11 or 12 when he first played in a pub with us. The pub managers generally used their discretion and - seeing how responsible the lad's parents are - were happy for him to perform. He went on to win the Stan Getz Award, so the early dues paying obviously did him some good.
