I wonder if this "Black Pearl" is the same ship that the Newport singer Jim McGrath served as a cook going back and forth across the Atlantic. (Prolly late '70s/early '80s) He wrote and recorded a song with The Reprobates with the chorus something like:

"Across the Western Ocean on the Old Black Pearl
I still miss my Newport Girl
Hair so ???? and ??? so ?????
and I never get back
dah dah dah dah dah dah dah
Back home on the Old Black Pearl"


McGrath had a few great yarns about that particular voyage. Says the Capt. declined to speak to him all the way from the Isle of Wight back to Newport.   Something about drinks and German sailors and more drinks and a flopped singing performance for a Lord Beaverbrook. Tsk, tsk...
