Any quilters on Mudcat? I'm pretty sure I saw a few of you around here somewhere.

I have quilted before (patchwork cushions, and a rather daring Escher quilt with tessellated lizards made from old velvet curtains) but I want to make a cot quilt for my best friend's soon-to-arrive baby.

I have the design in my head, but could do with some practical tips like - what size should it be? And what should I use as wadding? (I've used blankets, newspaper and scraps of material in the past, but for a baby I'd like to make it safe and possibly washable.) I'm going to hand quilt it but there'll be machine appliqué too. Oh, and has anyone bought wadding and the suchlike online, and if so can you recommend a good UK site?
