I sang this song close to 40 years ago - one of the first folk songs I ever learned. The folk club I'm a member of is having a bit of 'remember when' to honour the club that was the forerunner of the current club. One former memeber said to me quite recently - 'what was that song you used to sing years ago - the one about Monongahela Sal?. I wasn't too sure about all of the words, but decided to Google it - and there it was! So, that song has made it all the way to southern New Zealand, probably via a Pete Seeger recording - the guy I learned it from all those years ago was a keen old time country and bluegrass fan, who travelled a fair bit.
