A couple more points about ANZAC day Shambles. After 8 months, and enormous loss of life, we had to pull out of Gallipoli and sail away. So in fact we celebrate a defeat. ( Only us Aussies & Kiwis can manage that ) The pull-out of thousands of troops was engineered in such a manner that not one soldier was killed, and the Turks were not aware that a withdrawal had taken place until some hours after the event. Not a bad achievement to disengage from an enemy that was, in some cases, only metres away and leave a hostile shore. I marched today, for the 28th time, with my comrades from the Vietnam war. What a great bunch of blokes. And in the quiet periods, between marching band brackets, sometimes all you can hear - is the tinkling of the medals.
