prmartinuk UK: What are university folk clubs like? (48) RE: UK: What are university folk clubs like? 12 Nov 07

From my experience at Cambridge and from what I've heard from friends at other Unis is that the traditional university folk club with weekly booked guest performers is more or less non-existent.

I know in Cambridge this is partly due to the fact that the other University folk societies have flourished, to the point that it wouldn't be possible to put a regular event on without clashing with at least one of the other folk music or dance societies (you can play or dance nigh on every day during term time).

We do still have the occasional guest performers doing concerts, and there is usually a good contingent who go to the local concert venues when they have things on, and the Cambridge Folk Club as well. So folk is not dead.
