Well I lived down South all my life but now my home is in Scotland and I just love it, albeit my friends are all just under 500 miles away, but hey make new friends, keep in touch with existing ones by web cam, face book, email etc etc, as suggested above. When visiting book well in advance and get really cheap train tickets and treat the traveling as a day out, relax let the train take the strain...although it can be a stressful journey occasionally!

Scotland is a beautiful place and the people are great also.

My great grandfather came from Edinburgh so it feels like a form of coming home so to speak.
