Fascinating discussion of Layland/Laylum... I'd have to say that it's a matter of verbal tradition and lack of written lyrics until the song had "matured". I was wondering if there's a commonly known sailor's version of this song. It often sounds like a pully-hauley chanty when I've heard it done a capella. Anyone know if this was ever put down on a broadside somewhere as a song of the sea? jake@brigandsfolie.com
