GUEST,Appaloosa Lady BS: Patch Adams - Inspiration & Integrity (8) Patch Adams Humanity & Healthcare 20 Mar 08

Could someone put this into BS for me please.   Thank you.

OK...Patch Adams.

I found these videos the other day, of Patch talking at a Brazilian Medical Lecture. You need to get past the opening intros and questions, which, annoyingly, don't have subtitles, to Patch himself. Then you will hear so much about this man. You will see a man who will never give in to apathy. You will also learn a great deal about where this world is going so very, very wrong, although I know that many in here already are aware.

37 years after he first decided to build his hospital, he is still out there, trying to get the first brick laid. Is he downhearted? Not at all, for this is a man who will never give up, never give in, never lose faith or hope.

In the first video he is talking about the terrible sorrow of losing his father in WW11, when he was just 16 years old. How that started him *thinking*. Then, he became aware of racism, discovered that black Americans were not allowed to use the same bathrooms as white Americans, and so much more, and that hurt him even more than his father's death, this inhumanity against another human being. At that point he nearly turned away, gave up on life, feeling he did not want to live in a world that did not care, but luckily, he turned back, and became the inspirational fighter he now is.

To me, this man is sorely overlooked in this world.

There is no reason on this earth why his hospital should not be built and running, why there should not be his style of hospitals in every country in the world. The reason why there is not, and why so many other things are so very wrong around us, is in the second interview, where Patch talks about the apathy that is stifling us, as a species, as a world.

Each video clip of this lecture (and there are many) is filled with incredible wisdom, albeit such easy to understand wisdom, and yet, such frustratingly buried wisdom, in this dumbed down, corporatised world, where thinking seems to be so discouraged.

Patch is a difficult man to track down. He doesn't believe in promoting himself very much, mainly because he's too damned busy being 'out there and doing it'. It drives his 'team' a little nuts at times. They've tried to get him to come into computers, to have mobile phones, to be in contact with them, but he is driven to do what he does best, and that is to talk to real people, face to face.
Often his team have no idea where he even is, all they know is that he is always busy, always working, always bringing people in. I know this from being in contact with his Gesundheit organisation, all of whom adore this man and will do anything they can for him.

So, if any of you out there are looking for good causes to raise money for, then spare a thought for Patch, and maybe, if you have time, help spread the word about him, because this world needs Patch Adams! And how sad it will be if we only realise that *after* he has left it.

He is a brave man. He is not afraid to say what he thinks, no matter how dangerous that may be. He is open, honest and determined. Yet our children are being presented with idiotic celebrities who care not a jot for anyone but themselves.

We should be inspiring our children about Patch. We should be taking a part of every single day of their school lives to teach them about Patch and his philosophy on life, because without wisdom and humanity their world is not going anywhere.

The words below are taken from Video 3.

"...When we build our hospital, we will pay the person who sweeps, and the person who does surgery, who in the US can make $3,000,000 a year, they will have the same salary, $300 a month. Thousands of doctors and nurses apply to our hospital for $300 a month, because we are the only hospital in the US where you can practice with love. They will trade $3,000,000 for $3,000 for that context. It's the same reason medical students flock to these lectures, drooling to be able to practice medicine in love, to love their patients, to be tender to them."
