I'm refreshing this thread having just read Dan Worral's study of concertinas at sea on his new website (http://www.angloconcertina.org/). Besides addressing the issue of its title, it also shows that concertinas and other instruments were used for song accompaniment, at least in this context, but with obvious implications.
