Pope Benedict was in New York today and held mass at Yankee Stadium. It was funny as I walked into my local bar and they had the event up on the big screen TV where normally there would be NASCAR, Baseball Golf or Hockey,but today it was a mass.

Having grown up in NYC I have been to Yankee Stadium a number of times and I thought some of the differences between a regular sporting event and the mass were interesting.

First it was odd to hear the vendors hawking their wares.

"Popcorn Here, Get Your Popcorn, Peanuts, Eucharists Here!"

Then they broke with tradition and in the 7th inning stretch they played Take me out to the Pontiff...

"Buy me some peanuts and Eucharist, I don't care if the devil gets pissed, and it's root, root, root for the home team, save my soul or it's a shame, for its Domino, Spirito, Sa-a-ncto at the old Pope Game!"

After the mass the assembled congregating of 57 thousand started to wave these bits of fabric around much like the Pittsburgh Steelers used to have, but these were The Terrible Towels of Turin!

The first 500 Catholics through the gate got a souvenir Chalice with a picture of the the Pope on one side and Derek Jeeter on the other, a real collector's item!

Well that's New York for you, wait long enough and you will see everything.
