BELLE OF BROUGHTON
(Eric Bogle)

When summer time is bloomin'
And the air's filled wi' perfumin'
I walk in time forgotten
Wi' my bonny Belle of Broughton

Chorus
Though now your hair is silver
And your beauty's gone forever
I hae no' forgotten
That you were the Belle of Broughton

At harvest time or dancin'
The young bucks would come prancin'
In love they were besotten
Wi' the Belle of Broughton

You and I together
Would wander by the river
In dress of silk and satin
You were the Belle of Broughton

Sung by Eric Bogle on 'Bogle live in person' - recorded live in Germany, February 1977, Folkclub Munster - Autogram & Folk Records, Nottuln, Germany - ALLP-211

BACKGROUND. I wrote this song for my grandmother. She died when I was quite young. And to my youthful eyes she always seemed incredibly old. My grandfather told me when I was older, that my grandmother was considered a great beauty when she was a young girl. He always considered himself lucky she choose him. I was too young at that time to notice any lingering traces of her physical beauty, or appreciate her inner beauty. She came from a small village outside Peebles called Broughton, and in her days she was the Belle of Broughton. Eric Bogle
Eric wrote this song in January 1973.
