I suspect it is something to do with association football, more recently known as "soccer" by those who have trouble with more than two syllables. It is a game played by oiks and much followed, I believe, by the lower classes, in the UK and parts of the continent. It is one of the rare cultural phonomena in which the USA has in general showed better taste than the English, other British, French, Italians, Spanish, and so on and the game is not, I believe, so widespread there. I used to live near White City, and I can say with certainty that it is associated with brutish uncivilised and antisocial behaviour. Regrettably, like Estuarine English and affected mockney accents, it has become fashionable among occupations that once were upper middle class.
