I used to hear this song on the American Forces Network in the early '50s, while I was serving in the Royal Navy. It appeared on a show supporting the March of Dimes called "Break the Record". They would play the same song with excruciating frequency until they had collected enough donations (I forget the exact amount) to break the record, and so end the suffering of the listeners.
