Were you here and not across the pond I'd cheerfully recommend a Mazda 3. I just got a hatchback and I'm already very fond of it. Good mileage, decent performance and room, good safety marks and appeal and great resale value. Very good on my insurance as well and very little problem getting into parking spaces!
