I always understood the "holy people" to be what we call the "unco guid" in Scots, namely that section of the religious establishment that is more interested in enforcing strict rules on other people than worshiping God. Carter is quoted as writing "Faith is more basic than language or theology. Scriptures and creeds may come to seem incredible, but faith will still go dancing on. This, I believe, is the kind of faith that Christ commended". Any way, my favourite of his songs is "The Devil Wore a Crucifix"!
