From Major League Baseball Rule 4.15: If the game has not begun or the forfeiting team is winning the game, they will be credited with a 9-0 loss. If the forfeiting team is losing, the current score is kept as the final score. A forfeit in Major League Baseball took place in Los Angeles in 1995 during a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Saint Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals were ahead 2-1 in the 9th inning. Los Angeles fans started bombarding the playing field with baseballs they had been given for free as part of a Ball Day promotion. Despite appeals to the crowd by the Dodgers' management, the disorder continued. After a long delay during which it became obvious play could not continue, the umpires declared the game a forfeit. Since the Cardinals were leading 2-1, that became the official final score. Had the score been tied, or had the Dodgers been ahead, then the official final score would have been 9-0.
