This is another extremely pertinent reason for getting my Canadian passport.

Last year my sister was travelling to Vienna airport in the company of an Albanian family who she was trying to fly out to Sweden.

The car with the children made it through the Hungarian checkpoint but my sisters car which contained a diabetic Croatian lady and an Albanian, (uncle of the children)was stopped. When my sister phoned me in England on her mobile phone they had been imprisoned in the car for over 20 hours with no access to food or toilets. When i phoned the British Consulate they were totally negative. My sister has a Canadian passport and the Canadian consulate had an official there within 2 hours demanding that they be fed etc.

My sister spent a week in Hungary and was later fined. The Albanian man went to a detention camp and the kids made it to Oslo.
