I suspect you need to home in a little on what sort of folk club you want to study. Club vary tremendously, the intent of the participants even more so. Is it closed sessions, open sessions, singaround style, performance only, accepting all comers, traditionally focused, city centre working class, city centre wine bar, village based, youth orientated, etc, etc Even within 20 miles of where I am in Wigan (betwixt Liverpool and Manchester) there are examples of all these and more. Geographically I think there is quite a variation as well.
