Great lyrics, zonahobo. I am not familiar with this song, but I'd bet your dad gathered these great verses through what is termed the "folk process." That means he heard someone else sing them and liked them, or he simply made them up. My Dad's gone too. One of his favorite's was "Old Dan Tucker." I remember him singing it when I was a kid.
