I'm looking for a tear jerker named 'Poor Little Joe' which is a story about a waif on the streets of New York.
one verse is something like this:
As I was wandeering through New York's gay throng
I spied a poor boy who was singing a song
But though he was singing, he wanted for bread
And though he was smiling, he wished himself dead
