I know it was a song because I remember singing it! I wish I could give you the tune on here since I do remember that part. The 24 robbers doesn't sound familiar. Seems like one verse had something to do with going to town and ending up in a gown. How I wish I'd written the words down long ago. I'd love to teach this song to my kids. We had such fun singing it. I keep hoping that someone will find my request and send me the words.
