And what about the Charles de Menezes shooting? This was an innocent Brazilian plumber, mistaken for an Arab terrorist by the police and shot dead on the tube train by a firearms team. The morning after, Sir Ian Blair, the Met Police Commissioner, went before the press and stated that de Menezes had been acting suspiciously, had run from the police when challenged, jumped over the ticket barrier and thrown himself on the train. However, witnesses to the shooting said that de Menezes had casually strolled through the ticket barrier and onto the train - no hurdling barriers, no hurry, no running away from anyone. Not only had the Met police lied, but they had even lied to their own Commissioner who then repeated the lie to the media. Blair was the only one not to see this lie as a resigning matter. I'm not a great fan of Boris Johnson but he did Londoners a great service when he told Commissioner Blair to sling his hook!
