Malcolm, 'MF' appears in Rodger's abbreviations as 'La Roncière, Marine Française'. Bet that one's not on your bookshelf! Brian, "auger theory could have found its way into the historical accounts from the ballad itself". Just about feasible, but where did it get into the ballad from? - Orality since 1190 until the time of broadsides? Perhaps Malcolm has an 'earliest published' date? Tom
