I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of two late-breaking concerts we're having at Dusty Strings in the next few weeks. Here are the details. (The second, especially, seems like it would be of great interest to many Seattle 'Catters.)

Benefit Concert for Laurie Riley
Saturday, Nov. 8th, 7:30 p.m., $15.00
Harper Tasche, Molly & Davy (heh heh...there I go, shamelessly self-promoting again!), Michael MacBean and Beth Kollé will share a concert to benefit our friend and harper Laurie Riley, who is suffering from Lyme's Disease and unable to work full-time. Each performer will play a short set, but there will most likely be much 'mixing and matching' among the performers, culminating in a rousing finale with all performers onstage at once!

This is a unique line-up of some of Seattle's impressive nationally-known talent. Dusty Strings has kindly donated their concert space, and all profits will go to Laurie. A fun raffle at the concert will also help raise funds for Laurie, and donations of raffle items are welcome (please contact Beth at bethkolle@comcast.net).

Laurie Riley's compositions and arrangements have influenced countless harpers over the years she has been performing, recording and teaching. Her contribution to raising awareness of the harp as a folk instrument is priceless. She has produced numerous music books that have delighted harpers the world over. Her creative CDs have won critical acclaim, and her DVDs have served as valuable instruction to many players. Laurie is co-inventer (with Liz Cifani) of the contemporary double-strung harp.

Ken Perlman & the Canote Brothers
Saturday, November 22nd, 7:30 p.m., $18
In a concert celebrating a wide swath of old-time music, Ken Perlman presents a varied program featuring old-time and Celtic-based fiddle tunes from across North America. He'll share the fruits of his folklore fieldwork, playing on banjo the tunes he collected himself from traditional fiddle players in Eastern Canada, notably Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. While the Canote Brothers also have one foot firmly planted in the traditions of American Roots music, they certainly have an ear tuned to the novel and the quirky. As one reviewer put it, "Their songs all have the ring of cock-eyed classics!" Ken, Greg and Jere will also lead banjo, fiddle, and guitar workshops November 22 and 23.
