Wrong about gold dollars! They were actual USA gold coins minted for circulation 1849-1889. The song "Last Gold Dollar" is about a coin, not a pretty piece of paper. The USA did issue gold backed paper money known as Gold Certficates in denominations ranging fro $10 to $100,000. Unlike silver backed Silver Certificates and unsecured United States Notes, Gold Certificates were never issued in $1, $2, ad $5 denominations. (The $100,000 Gold Certficates were only used to settle accounts among central banks, and were never released for general circulation).
